Singer-Songwriter
Melissa Durkee Moorhouse, better known by her stage name Melissa D, is from the gentle hills of rustic Vermont, USA. Her sound is earthy, chill, and holistic. She is a classically trained vocalist and former rock front-woman for The Alley Katz where she shared the stage with many talented musicians including Joe Moore (Pork Tornado -Jon Fishman's{Phish} band) and Benjamin Orr (The Cars). Melissa was also in a folk-rock collaboration called CHILL with Michael Cressey. In 2016, working with producers Clint Bierman (The Grift), Kristina Stykos and Phil Henry, Melissa started quietly and consistently writing, recording and releasing her solo work from her small rural home in New England, forgoing the typical trappings of the music industry (big tours, record deals and relocating to a major music city).
As a scrappy, indie artist with no label or corporate sponsorship and very little promotion, Melissa D's soothing songs have managed to find the ears and hearts of thousands of people both locally and internationally. Her music has been featured on many radio programs and streaming playlists, including Sip-N-Stream, Women of Substance Radio, and Vermont Public. Her song Little Girl (the title track from her solo EP release) was nominated by the InterContinental Music Awards as Best Song of America in the American Roots genre for 2021.
Melissa is also passionate about animal rescue and humanitarian causes and had a 20 year career working in public service as a counselor and advocate in a variety of roles positively impacting the lives of many.
"Melissa D has a distinct voice that, from her very first note, immediately sets her apart from the pack. She has a lilting quality tinged with pleasingly edgy rasp, reminiscent of standouts like Suzanna Hoffs and Meredith Brooks. She sings with an openness and vulnerability that is both inviting and infectious. Her songs are familiar, like favorite childhood memories you fondly conjure up over and over, but not predictable or routine. One listen and you'll surely be back for more." - Bree Noble, CEO Women of Substance Radio & Podcast
